Know About Liposuction Risks before the Surgery

 

One must be aware of liposuction risks before deciding to go ahead with the procedure. Liposuction gone bad is a similiar case where operation can go wrong.

 

Liposuction is a cosmetic medical procedure that removes fat deposits while shaping the body. This is not an alternative for weight loss, although this is a commonly held myth.

The liposuction procedure may be performed by any licensed doctor and there is no formal training required to practice liposuction.

 

Nonetheless, there are some risks and complications in having the liposuction procedure done which you should be aware of prior to the surgery.

 

The procedure is safer and simpler than most surgeries; however liposuction risk cannot be overlooked and below are just a few of those.

 

Rare but Major Liposuction Risks

 

  • As with any medical procedure or surgery, there is always the risk of fatality however rare.
  • Toxicity from the anesthesia used to numb the skin, specifically lidocaine, can cause complications with numerous symptoms including a metallic taste in the mouth and muscle convulsions.

 

Other Risks

 

  • Burns are a potential liposuction risk when the procedure is done with ultrasound assistance.
  • An imbalance of fluids may result in a liposuction risk when fluids are removed from the fat deposits and others are injected by the doctor during the procedure.
  • Another liposuction risk is infection which can occur in any surgery. It is important to always keep the site of the surgery clean and sometimes doctors will prescribe an antibiotic to make sure that infection does not set in.
  • Skin necrosis is also a possible liposuction risk, involving the skin above the site of the liposuction procedure. This results in a change in skin color and can also get infected.
  • Swelling or edema is another more common liposuction risk that can vary in intensity and duration by person from weeks to months. 
  • Embolism happens when fat loosened during the surgery enters the blood vessels that are broken or ruptured during the procedure.
  • Puncture wounds in organs (visceral perforations) occur when the doctor performing the liposuction procedure punctures an organ and will need to be repaired through surgery.
