What Do You Know About the Liposuction Procedure ?

Everyone knows that the liposuction procedure today is one of the most common and popular methods for cosmetic surgery.

However, how many really know what the process entails.

Do you know the risks that a liposuction procedure involves or what needs to be done to prevent these? There are many questions about the liposuction procedure that need to be asked and answered. Let’s go through some of these questions and get some clarity on this method.

How is the Liposuction Procedure done?

This method involves the cosmetic removal of fat layers from the different parts of the body. Generally, liposuction is done on the face, neck, upper arms, abdomen, thighs, buttocks and calves. This procedure is usually done under local anesthesia, though sometimes it is done with general anesthesia as well.

The surgery starts with extremely tiny incisions in the skin where the fat is to be removed; then the fat layer is stretched and expanded with an anesthetic fluid through a series of injections under the skin. Lastly, a thin hollow stainless steel is inserted and the fat is extracted with a powerful vacuum suction.

Advice on how to Promote Fast Healing

Once the procedure is done, it takes a few days to a few weeks for the skin to regain its natural look. The healing process can be hastened by a few critical things that have to be done post surgery:

  • You should get up and walk as soon as the anesthesia wears off. Most of the times the patient can walk away from the hospital within a few hours from the completion of the liposuction procedure. However, in some cases – particularly when fat is removed from a large area or in large quantities – it is advisable to stay overnight in the hospital for observation. In these cases there is a slight possibility of going into shock and this requires immediate medical attention
  • You should use the liposuction compression garment immediately after the liposuction procedure. This garment helps in the rapid drainage of the anesthetic fluid and also in restoring  the skin’s elasticity in the shortest time possible
  • Avoid exercises and lifting of any weights during the recuperation period (somewhere between 2 weeks and 2 months).

Liposuction procedure is known as the cosmetic surgery with the least amount of side effects or risks. Nonetheless, there are a few minor complications such as blood clot formations, bruising, loss of sensation and lumpiness in the area. However, all of these are easy to address with a simple repeat of the procedure and/or localized attention.

The liposuction procedure is as simple as you and your surgeon want it to be.
