Laser liposuction or assisted liposuction is a simple European technology that was invented to reduce the pain, swelling and bruising normally associated with the conventional liposuction methods.
What is liposuction?
Liposuction is the removal of unwanted fat bulges and lumps from areas of the body. Fat cells are vacuumed out through tubes inserted into the body through small incisions.
How it Works
The way laser liposuction works
- the laser’s low-level energy wave length is focused on the part of the body that needs work
- the waves penetrate through the skin and weaken the membrane of the cells that hold the fat
- the fat contained in these cell oozes out of their parameter
Then a small incision is made through which a tiny surgical instrument called a cannula is inserted, sucking the fat out of the area like in conventional liposuction, but without a major incision.
For the final procedure of laser liposuction the laser is then reset to reduce the pain, inflammation and swelling. This dramatically reduces the postoperative discomfort.
The following day the patient usually returns for a second follow up session of pain management.
Where can it be used?
The areas where laser liposuction is most commonly used on women are the abdomen, hips, thighs and knees. On men it is common on the abdomen, love handles, enlarged breasts, arms and neck. Laser liposuction can also be used to remove the sweat glands from the armpit area to reduce sweating without any danger of interfering with the body’s process of cooling itself.
The advantages of laser liposuction
The advantages of laser liposuction are clear and several.
Laser liposuction requires a much shorter recovery time when compared to tumescent or ultrasonic methods.
Laser liposuction has greatly reduced the post-operative swelling and bruising.
Laser liposuction reduces the need for any type of post-operative pain medication.
The procedure time for laser liposuction is no longer than conventional liposuction and is usually done under local anesthesia and a sedative is the only medication that the patient will require for the duration of the procedure.
If the patient wishes, the fat that is taken from the designated areas during laser liposuction can be used to fill in other areas of the patient’s body that are lacking fat. The most common of these areas are the lips.
Most patients that have had laser liposuction can usually return to normal activities in just a few days.
