The Facts about Large Volume Liposuction

The process of large volume liposuction is much more expansive and time consuming than traditional liposuction which removes smaller amounts of fat.

This newer procedure of taking out greater quantities of fat is an entirely different physiological process. With many advances in the field of liposuction, larger quantities of fat can now be removed  safely with less blood loss.

These advances have taken place over the last twenty years and are making large volume liposuction a very popular and readily available cosmetic procedure.

While no standardized definition exists for it, large volume liposuction is commonly recognized as total, or more specifically 5 liters in volume, fat removed during the liposuction procedure.

A new concern with the increase in demand for such cosmetic procedures is that inexperienced doctors are jumping into the practice. Thus large volume liposuction results in unnecessary complications.

These can range from smaller and non-life threatening adverse effects to the worst complication possible, death.

Liposuction - Big Business

With cosmetic surgery becoming a big business, a vital element can be overlooked, which is careful patient selection as large volume liposuction is not for everyone.

It is also important for patients to be realistic about their expectations and the limitations of large volume liposuction; keeping in mind that liposuction is still a body contouring method and not a suitable weight loss alternative.

The difference between small scale and large volume liposuction has to be recognized and respected, otherwise the complications can be disastrous and end in death.

The surgical team has to be careful to avoid fluid overload and maintain the appropriate core body temperature of the patients as they are prone to hypothermia due to the work on large portions of the body.

One doctor’s opinion is that it is better to remove larger quantities of fat from fewer sites on the body, suggesting three or four sittings. This may also circumvent the problems associated with a single large volume liposuction.

Large volume liposuction while not a cure for obesity can be used as a tool to shape an obese patient’s body to help him achieve a more positive outlook. It also serves as a motivator to a more healthy and rewarding lifestyle.

With the introduction of new and large volume liposuction surgeries, many opportunities are opening up for various patients’ needs and desires, albeit with different health and safety concerns for both the patient and the doctor
